Millions of children are in need of urgent humanitarian support after two devastating earthquakes and numerous aftershocks hit south-east Türkiye and Syria on February 6, 2023.

The collective death toll is now at least 41,000. While the total number of children affected remains unclear, 5.4 million children live in the 10 provinces of Türkiye hit by the earthquakes, and more than 3.6 million children are affected in Syria. Many families have lost their homes and are now living in temporary shelters, often in freezing conditions and with snow and rain adding to their suffering.

The earthquakes have also caused widespread damage to schools and other essential infrastructure, further jeopardizing the well-being of children and families. Access to safe water and sanitation is also a major concern, as are the health needs of the affected population.

This is a cause with deep a personal connection. My mother passed away in 2003 from ALS at the age of sixty-five. Though she faced the disease with courage, dignity, faith, and grace for almost six years, she suffered a rapid decline into complete physical paralysis before she left us.

SDMS appreciates your taking an interest in helping find treatments and a cure for this cruel disease,

Sincerely,
Paul Tseng
